Housekeeping and Acknowledgements
Before we begin this month's Newsletter, I wanted to take a moment to pass along some information to you.

First, I would like to thank you all for subscribing to this Newsletter. Your support and encouragement is welcomed and appreciated. Since the first issue of this Newsletter appeared in March of this year, subscription has doubled thanks to your referrals.

Secondly, your patronage of this Newsletter's website, www.itsm.info has caused traffic to increase threefold since it's launch 6 months ago. In particular, I would like to acknowledge 2 primary contributors to website traffic and the downloading of reference materials, www.hp.com and www.ibm.com. Together they comprise almost 5 percent of all traffic to www.itsm.info and downloads of the materials available there.

Lastly, I have been requested to make available previous Issues of this Newsletter. I will be adding those to the www.itsm.info with the next scheduled website maintenance cycle.

Again, thank you all for your continued patronage and support!

Preface
Last month we discussed a critical core area of ITSM, Change Management, defining it and the best practices and other supporting ITSM information relative to performing it.

This month we will be focusing on one other critical ITSM core area, Configuration Management, defining it and the best practices and other supporting ITSM information relative to performing it.

Configuration Management - A Workable Definition
Configuration Management is the process of managing the physical and logical configuration perspective of IT infrastructure and the IT services being provided.

Configuration Management Objectives
    1) Develop an initial Configuration Profile of the logical and physical IT infrastructure across the 5 perspectives of people, process, technology, organization, and integration.
    2) Set up a Configuration Management function to identify and register key production components.
    3) Develop a procedure for tracking the “state changes” of these components and their relationship to IT users.
    4) Integrate with Change Management and bring the computing environment to a known baseline state.

Configuration Management Guidelines
Experience has shown that typically, Configuration (and Change) Management processes are best implemented initially as a manual system. Once the processes have been in practice for some appropriate period, then the processes can take advantage of automation options of Change assessment and tracking and automated review and registration of Configuration Data Base (CMDB), Configuration items (CI’s).
    1) Plan - for best practices to manage the configuration
    2) Identify - all components of an IT infrastructure
    3) Control - to manage the CI's within/and the CMDB
    4) Status - record and report all information for each CI
    5) Verification - a recurrent audit of the configuration
